One thing weve encountered that hinders automation is that the RCX brick
shuts off after 15 minutes. We constantly need to restart the program.
Have you found a way to defeat this shutdown?

John,
I and Steve H posted some things on this back in October of 2005: the link

The trick using NQC is the SetSleepTime function. SetSleepTime(0);
disables the auto shut down.
Hope that helps.

It doesnt help me one bit:-) I am virtually ignanent when it comes to the
RCX; that is my sons domain. Ill pass this along to him, though.
So basically you are suggesting that he program the RCX using NQC rather than
using the Mindstorms software? (if this isnt a basic yes/no question, please
feel free not to elaborate;-)

You can configure the RCX sleep time using the standard MindStorms software. I
dont have an installation of this handy to tell you exactly how to do it, but I
remember setting this after doing firmware downloads. The sleep time setting is
preserved until you (or a program) change it, or until the batteries die.
According to
this completely unrelated article about Hamster Odometry:
...you will have make sure your RCX doesnt go into sleep mode. You can change
this in the Getting Started section of the Mindstorms software.
Strangely, the article has no mention of elderberries!
