I often think about growth in serveal ways, two of which are: big, more brick

As Ed mentioned in his post, we limit our shows to 3 or 4 per year. We don't
want to get burned out, we just want to enjoy. If it becomes a chore, the
quality will drop and then interest will wane to the point where no-one will be
motivated to show up. I can imagine this applies to the great majority of people
who just do this for fun.

More worrying, though, is the apparent high standard of creative work which gets
put on display. From the point of view of a prospective newbie that is.

I still feel totally outclassed at events like BrickFest. There are just so many
reeeeealy good people out there. I almost didn't go to my second BrickFest for
that reason except they found something that needed doing that I seemed suited
for.

In our local club (LUCNY) we have formed a "core group" which is, I think,
something the inevitably happens. The group gets along well and we work as a
pretty good team. I can see that being intimidating to a potential new member no
matter how encouraging we try to be. Our stuff (buildings, trains,
infrastructure elements etc all work together because we've done it before) They
somehow have to climb the learning curve quicker than we did, because it started
and grew with us, but now its already running they have to try and jump onboard
while the train is already in motion so to speak. I know I'd feel a bit sheepish
about my stuff if I were just getting started now.

The way LUNCY really helped (I was not one of the founding members) was by
having very informal get togethers which weren't public events. Full scale
layouts and practice runs without a deadline of the show openeing at 10 am are a
very good thing! We are lucky to have an available facilty for this. I'd
recommend most groups to try to do this especially if they have people who need
to get up to speed. Club meetings at restaurants or other social gathering
places are ok, but having a hall with lots of table space to experiment and
practice is invaluable.
