The problem with the tradisional background stuff is that it is fixed. We
(MichLug/MichLTC) have a different layout at each show. Also the layout is
composed of several people's stuff resulting in a layout larger than any one
person has. An additional big advantage that LEGO trains have is that the layout
breaks down into much smaller pieces. We have transported very large layouts in
cars and vans (Although we have gotten big enough and organized enough to talk
about a club trailer). I for one would not want to give up the flexibility of
brickscapes
