Much faster forward/reverse combinations are possible in this configuration :) Sometimes I will hook up a second transformer to the track and we'll "battle" because I can negate her controller and vice versa.
It seems kids not only like the high speed of Lego trains, they love to race
their trains against each other. Even on a standard dual oval track
(http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1070667)
they will race each other, although they know the trains are not running equal
distances.
So we have rigged up several equidistant tracks for the kids to properly race
their trains. They all require the use of crossings to separate the two tracks,
one for each train.
Overlapping ovals require just a pair of crossings:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1070685
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1070670
Overlapping figure of 8 tracks require four crossing:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1070671
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1070680
The figure of 8 tracks will fit into a 8 ft x 4 ft baseboard (size of FLL
field).
Unlike straight-track drag-racing, these tracks require skills to avoid
collisions. But sometimes, or too often, it seems collisions occur on purpose :)
