Ah, I see you have gone public:-)

W- broad guage, Y is metre guage, Z and N are for 2 and 2 ft 6 guages. D is
for diesel, A is for electric, and CA is AC/DC current electrics. and the
last letter is for traffic, M for mixed, P for passenger, S for
shunter/switcher and G for goods. the last number is (I think), according to
the cronological sequence of locomotive production, but more recently it has
been changed to mean the horse power of the loco. To confuse things even
further, some locos have been excluded from the new classification.

This is very interesting info, Samarth. Im actually curious-- what is the
actual gauge of W? The reason I ask is kind of ironic. Because the trucks
on the WDM-1 are so wide in comparison to the engine chassis, it makes the
engine look narrow to me-- closely resembling most 6 wide LEGO trains (the
irony is that you have constructed it 8 wide:-)
|
IIRC, its 5 ft 6 or a little more. I found the page I was looking for, with
reference to the guage, here it is: http://www.irfca.org/faq/faq-gauge.html
|
LEGO track is actually a wide gauge for 8 wide; it is about the perfect gauge
(standard 4 8.5) for 10 wide.
|
This is interesting. Im not good (read horrible) at math, would you mind
telling me what the feet-to-stud measurement I should be using, taking the guage
here into account? I currently use 1ft = 3/4ths of a stud, (as I had mentioned
earlier) which has nothing to do with the track width. Even this I use as a
general guideline, all the actual building is done by going by what my eyes tell
me ;-)

As I told you privately, Ill say publically: nice work and attention to
details. You have really captured the spirit of the proto!
|
Thanks again! What I really like about the coaches in particular is the fact I
didnt have to do any of that selective compression stuff. The proto pantry
car has 9 windows on one side, and 5 on the other, so does my model; whereas the
1st class has 7 on either side, and so does the model. I was ridiculously lucky
with some aspects of the model, especially this one, because the number of
windows adds up to 28, which is EXACTLY the number there is in the 4511 set.
Whew!
