anyone convert 7862 decoupler to 9V?

Hi,
I was playing around with a recently acquired 7862 12V remote controlled
decoupler, and was wondering if I could see how other people have fared with
this set.
The obvious negative, is that it needs the old fashioned magnets (5066)with
the vertical rod pointing down from the bracket holding the magnet.  A problem
easily avoided by selecting which wagons get the old fashioned magnetic
couplers.
A suspected problem, I didn't set up any 12V track to confirm, but I believe
the old wheelsets with the 2 wheels on a 2x4 brick is slightly lower than the
newer 5304 train wheelsets.  It looks like only about 1mm, but the decoupler is
not very tall, and seemed to be missing magnets hooked up to the newer wheels.
The most complicated and probably insurmountable problem, is the old fashioned
rail is applied directly to the decoupler base, without any sleepers.  I see
only two possible conversions to 9V.  The first is to somehow cover the 12V
track with metal, converting it to a pseudo 9V.  Not sure how to stick the
metal to the plastic, and how to connect the 9V to the 12V track ends.  The
second option, is to nearly totally destroy a segment of 9V track, leaving only
the rail part on one side, the half sleepers on the ends and the rail with
sleepers on the other edge.
Has anyone tried any of this?  Any suggestions?  (Other than selling the remote
controlled decoupler!)
