Ever since the GMLTC became one of the first clubs to build our trains 8-wide, we’ve run into problems trying to run long trains.

Simply, the LEGO magnets aren’t strong enough! Try to pull several 8-wide cars around a 180degree corner, and we’d often get disconnects because the magnets couldn’t hold the cars together.

Well, I think I’ve come up with a solution to that!

Folder here, once moderated.

I found some small magnets at a store near my house. I looked at them and thought “hmmm - those are almost the same size as LEGO magnets.” Turns out they’re actually slightly smaller than the LEGO magnets - but they’re several times stronger.

All I do is put one of these magnets between the two standard LEGO magnets, and I can do this:

Yep, that is an 8-wide passenger car hanging only by the magnet coupler!

I might bring a bunch of them to Brickfest PDX, but that’s getting close to .buy-sell-trade for .trains, so I won’t comment further. *grin*

As always, comments are welcome.

(...) Yep. I've done it before. It even works with a regular Lego magnet in between the two, because then it is a "more powerful" magnet force holding the two cars together. Works well with the engine to first car magnet- if you needed more than (...) (20 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

(...) Neat find. Thanks for sharing. I am thinking that judicious use of these would allow very very long trains to be run. (...) I hope you do! (20 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Hello John. I could even imagine replacing some of the original magnets in some of my couplers, provided I can find magnets that I can mechanically fit into the LEGO plastic ring. It would also be an interesting experiment, whether the 12V (...) (20 years ago, 6-Jan-04, to lugnet.trains)
