Hello Jan-Albert,
I have also 3 engines 12V that are OUT, I also have noticed simmillar problem
as you have about the gear on axle that is being damaged by the friction.
This is the weakest link in the power transmission chain.
I think that the wheels are being mounted on the axle end with "CIRCLIPS" (I am
not sure of the exact english technical term for it), these little rings that
have a spring effect, and must be stuck in place.
I remember that one of the engine has just the plastic wheel broken and that is
how I found out this.
I am not sure how to be able to UNmount the wheel without damage.
As to replace the gear, I am also in the expectation of a possible solution,
isn't it possible to also make new ones on the CNC lathe ?
My other concern with the 12 v engines is the rubber band or tires on the
wheel, even with good engines, no tires means no movement and I have no
much left for replacement, have anybody found out an alternative or has LEGO
though of reproducing some of these ? or even complete 12V set 7865 ?
This would be appreciated by the whole 12V community.
Enjoy,
Laurent GERARD

A few weeks ago I acquired a 7740, of which the engine was in a separate
bag, in loads of parts.
After visiting the Muelheim show this weekend (and realizing that unless I
win the lotto I really need to find a way to fix the current motor) I got
the bag out again and had a batter look.
First thing I noticed was that the plastic (nylon/delrin) gears on the
wheel axles were both worn. Problem : I can't seem to get the wheels of the
axles. Second : one of the current pickup pins is missing.
Issue 2 ain't a big deal, I can easily make a few at work on the CNC lathe.
However the gear on the wheel axles is a big problem... has anyone ever
tried replacing them? If so, how (how to take the construction apart, where
to buy new gears, what type)?
And if all fails, does anybody have a bad 12v black train motor as in 7740
of which the wheel axles are still OK they'd be willing to trade/sell?
Thanks, and hoping to resolve this agonizing problem,

| (...) I think that would overstep easily the worth of the whole 7865 motor... Maybe you are lucky and the motor has been used for long time in only 1 direction? If so, it might have wear on only one side of the gearwheels teeth'. At least I do own (...) (23 years ago, 17-Apr-02, to lugnet.trains)
