Check out http://www.atsfrr.com/resources/funits/index.htm
According to that article, the different number of portholes is based on the
actual locomotive. FT A and B units had 4 portholes each, F3 A and B units had 3
portholes each, and F7 A units had 2 portholes, while F7 B units had 3.
With little work, the Lego model can represent any of the 3 variations.

It is my recollection that yes, the F series locomotives do have a door in the
nose.
You can also check out http://f-unit.railfan.net/ for more info on F series
locomotives. The guy who maintains that site even bought a real F unit cab!
