Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —John Neal
Although I built this MOC last year, I never got around to posting pics of it. It is a model of a Johnstown America Corporation's Bethgon Coalporter, a rotary dump hopper. I have posted the MOC and a pic of the proto here: (URL) can read more about (...) (23 years ago, 14-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —James Powell
(...) If it was in 6 wide, it'd be a great model :) Nice. Except about 4x too big for my rotary unloader. It does look quite good though, and I would like to congradulate you for making good models, even if they are to the wrong size. (NA stuff (...) (23 years ago, 14-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —Larry Pieniazek
(...) 6 wide, 8 wide, who cares. It's a great model, period (I've seen it in the flesh, John brought it to the train summit). I think we should let the whole 6-8 thing drop. It's just as bad to rag on someone for making 8 as it is to rag on someone (...) (23 years ago, 14-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —John Neal
(...) Thanks, Lar. (Actually, to answer JP, this model would be impossible 6 wide because of the width of the half cylinders). (...) Amen to that-- except that my Coalporter is......9 WIDE! {:^D (count'em;-) -John (...) (23 years ago, 14-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —Josh Baakko
(...) Actully you probly could eliminate the ribs, make it 6 wide, and use the 2x4 curved brick thingys with the 1x4 plate... then you'd have a simple to make coal car (add the ribs for some detail). (...) Personaly i don't really care, as long as (...) (23 years ago, 15-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —John Neal
(...) Why? (...) But then you miss the beauty of the model! The proto actually employs a double tub floor design, which "increases coal hauling capacity by up to 21 tons per car over traditional flat bottomed gondolas" (from their web site). That (...)           Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Just gotta love that name, it's such a great pun. Although the car, by rights, ought to be all black. ++Lar (23 years ago, 15-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —Josh Baakko
(...) Now i never knew that! (...) I guess 8 wide (9 for that matter) helps, and i may build one! Josh (23 years ago, 15-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —Christopher Masi
(...) It sure is purdy! I'll have to add this to my list of thing that I should probably try to copy. The ribs are offset by 1/2 stud? Did you go 9 so you could get that centerline support beam in the right place? Chris P.S. I don't think I'll ever (...) (23 years ago, 16-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —John Neal
(...) Thanks. (...) Yes. (...) Nope. In fact, I needed to use a 1x2 center stud for that, because I'm 8 wide at the bottom. The car started out as an 8 wide, but counting the offset of the ribs on each side, it totals 9. Now I normally wouldn't (...) (23 years ago, 16-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —Christopher Tracey
Excellent model John! Hmm... I can't say many more comments that haven't beens said in this thread already, so I'll just ask some questions. Are the ribs 1x1x5 bricks? How firmly is the red end attached? I see how it is tied in to at the bottom but (...) (23 years ago, 21-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Pics: JAC Bethgon Coalporter —John Neal
(...) Thank you! (...) 1x2x5. (...) It is braced from the inside. The faux coal plating across the top really tightens up the model. Without it, it is a very delicate model indeed. (...) I do want to create a string of them, but they require many (...) (23 years ago, 21-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) I'm at a loss for words... I do wish LEGO would come out with a gray half stud bulk pack- the GP7 I've been working on takes about 24 itself. I'm running low right now. (...) Looking forward to it! -chris (23 years ago, 22-Apr-01, to lugnet.trains)
