Judging by the colours of various sets over the years:
1) "Transport" related sets have the basic colours of Red and White.
Examples:
- #6399 Airport Monorail
- #379 Bus
- #6542 Atlantic Cargo Ship
- #6392 Passenger Plane
- #6375 Cargo Plane
2) "City Maintanence" sets have the basic colours of Red and Yellow.
Examples
- #6693 Refuse Truck
- #6671 Repair Lift
- #6607 Service Truck
- #6507 Mini Dumper
- #6521 Repair Truck (Missing the red flash but this can be added).
3) "Public Works" vehicles have the basic colours of Yellow and Black
Examples
- #6648 Dump Truck (1980)
- #6678 Pneumatic Crane
- #6658 Bulldozer
- #6535 Dumper
- #6361 Mobile Crane

| (...) It does help out some. However, I've been asking myself the question can't things be a little less monotonous? Most LEGO equipment is based upon rules and roads in Denmark & other corners of western Europe (hence the white dotted line streets (...) (25 years ago, 20-Sep-99, to lugnet.town)
