Brad Hamilton has fairly reviewed these sets, but I had such a positive
reaction to them I wanted to make a review.
These sets are actually models built from bricks and plates.
The presence of the original Shell sticker from 1980 makes me imagine that
someone at Shell said "Make some sets like you used to make Town sets."
They're not *classic*, but, when you build the Food Shop and the only barfy
parts are the extra tall bricks, it hearkens back to old Lego values like
interlocking bricks and sandwiched plates.
The cars in this range are not trivialized; they're town cars with classic
parts circa 1985 like 1x3 doors and wheel covers (on one piece bases, but
some are *minimal* bases with plenty of plates doing the job.) One of the
varied cars even solves the "head bumps canopy" problem with extra plates
under the doors--when was the last official model that really tried?
There is a commendable lack of 1x1 connectors. In some cases like the tags
on these gas cylinders they are even cool. (2554, sorry, this is a 1998
set.) I just really dislike 1x1 connectors in abundance because they added
only frills and tool holders to the past several years' lines while
structure went neglected. However the use of itty bitty pieces in the Shell
sets make me think the designer was actually modeling something, providing
realism instead of frills.
The tanker truck is a little weak, between the big windshield and funny
looking proportions, but it's not too juniorized, it is made from many
regular plates.
The car wash rollers (1255) are innovative in using a 10x hose to provide
the springy action behind the brushes.
I have to agree with Brad that 1254 is the best overall value. For a small
set, the interior has nice modeling: freezers, counter, cash register. And
did I mention that the structure is actually formed of bricks, plates, and
slopes?
The combination of all these Shell sets could probably be distilled into one
service station to rival 575, the classic Shell station. Maybe that's too
much praise but darn it, these sets make me feel good about Lego tonight.
