At our recent train show, NCLUG had all styles represented. I had large
but open-back buildings, next to Jimmy's closed-back Lego-set sized
buildings, next to Frank's Paradisa sets, next to Mike Walsh's
closed-back buildings, etc. It worked together and looked fine. There
was no glaring discontinuity between the different styles; it gave the
viewers more to look at. We had a road to tie it all together; that,
along with the monorail loop and 9V and 12V train track loops allowed
everything to blend together.

I think the biggest interest points in a town scene, regardless of size,
are the minifigs and what they are doing. In our layout, we had minifigs
in traffic accidents, being eaten by crocodiles, walking up the sides of
buildings, or just sitting on a parkbench enjoying a cup of coffee. I
saw a lot of both kids and adults pointing at the minifig's antics, and
everything that moved. In addition to the trains and monorail, we had a
flying blimp, working windmill, and spinning satellite dish. These help
draw the eye to the scene, without overwhelming it.

While all of these elements might not fit a home layout, I'd say use
your eye to see where it is drawn. If the open-backed buildings aren't a
distraction, then they should work fine, with or without closed-back
buildings.

Hi All,
I'm working hard getting my town/train setup and after visiting a number
of
other peoples town sites I got to thinking. There are two different
styles
at work, one is a realistic style, makeing the buildings, etc.. as
realistic
as possible, and the "lego" style, which we all know (open backed
buildings,
buildings that are only about 8-10 studs deep, etc..) I've been building
my
stuff in the lego stlye, so that I can use Lego sets in my town with out
them standing out.
My question for the groop is, is there a prefered style to use? I'm sure
it's just a matter of personal opinion, but I would like so people to
share
their views on it...
Thanks,
David
