Those are hydraulic motors - there are large nitrogen accumulators which are
charged during the launch recycle. It's going to be incredible to watch in
operation. The hydromotors rotate the drive drum, which is connected via a
cable loop to a skate which rides within the train's running rails. That
pulls the train forward during the launch.
It is Intamin's solution to pesky Linear Motors which had been the latest
fad for a while in launched train technology. This way it permits more even
power consumption (run a smaller hydraulic pump constantly to charge the
accumulators, vs. a large 2 megawatt pull or whatever every minute with the
linear motors).

| It is probably too expensive to go with oversize hydraulics and cheaper to put mechanical drives in larger equipment... I don`t know for sure though, but a company like John Deere should know what they are doing though... That coaster launch system (...) (22 years ago, 29-Mar-03, to lugnet.technic)
