The hydraulic motor will just stop turning when the load gets too heavy.

How?  Just don't put a relief in the system and oversize the components.

an IVT the hydraulic motor is there only to control the speed, most of the
power will travel through the sungear. If the hydraulic would slow down • the
tractor would still go forward...

Hydraulic motors works for small tractors like lawn tractors, but you • can`t
plow with them. With the IVT you can.

I don't buy that.  Intamin's hydraulic launch system can (will) generate the
equivelant of 10 000 hp and launch a 5 ton, 16 passenger train from 0-193
km/h in 4 seconds.  All they need is a bigger hydromotor and hydrostatic
pump unit.

I supose it comes down to I don't design tractors.  Just curious why it's so
complicated.

It is probably too expensive to go with oversize hydraulics and cheaper to put mechanical drives in larger equipment... I don`t know for sure though, but a company like John Deere should know what they are doing though... That coaster launch system (...) (21 years ago, 29-Mar-03, to lugnet.technic)
