First of all 1wd car would be only one wheel running. But in the 8840
instructions both rear wheels are driving the engine and it is by definition
a 2wheel drive car, but with a stiff rear axel. A true 1wd car would have
only one wheel conected to the engine and all the others would run free.
A way to make a sort of "differential" without using a rotating gearhouse is
to use slip-mode drive. Just connect one wheel direvt to the engine and use
a rubberband form the engine to the other wheel. When no friction (car goes
straight) both wheels would drive the car. When the car turns, one wheel
would run faster than the other one, and the rubberband would slip on the
bushing and give drive to that wheel but with slower rotation. For better
performance both wheels could probably be conected with a rubberband to the
engine.

| I'm still working in the sports car (which I think will be about 8-10 studs longer and 4 wider than 8408... using the same wheels). The frame is almost ready, and it will include 2-speed gearbox (if I can, I'll build a 3-speed one and pop-up (...) (22 years ago, 19-Dec-02, to lugnet.technic)
