Good idea, Phil. Definitely a less destructive way to do it.

In lugnet.technic, Robert G. Fay writes:
You can work the spring off the top of the plunger by pulling on it and
unscrewing it over the knob on the plunger. It will distort the spring
slightly, but it can be reinstalled in a reverse manner and still work • well.

You can also do the same off the side of the shaft - a variation of Mr. • Fay's
technique which causes a bit less distortion.  It's hard to describe, but • if
you get a thumbnail under the very end of the spring-wire, you can pull • the end
around the axle and to the left (holding the pump right side up) so you • have
one loop of spring off the shaft. Now hold the bottom of the spring • stationary,
and push the loose loop around the axle (to the left).  Each time you go • around
you should have one more loose loop until the whole spring is off.  This • way
you only stretch the permanently compressed ends of the spring, leaving • the
functional coils in their original shape.
