You can also do the same off the side of the shaft - a variation of Mr. Fay's
technique which causes a bit less distortion. It's hard to describe, but if
you get a thumbnail under the very end of the spring-wire, you can pull the end
around the axle and to the left (holding the pump right side up) so you have
one loop of spring off the shaft. Now hold the bottom of the spring stationary,
and push the loose loop around the axle (to the left). Each time you go around
you should have one more loose loop until the whole spring is off. This way
you only stretch the permanently compressed ends of the spring, leaving the
functional coils in their original shape.
