If you check out Jen's Skip Truck
http://www.telepresence.strath.ac.uk/jen/lego/hooklift.htm, there's a good
explanation of the geometry involved.
However I tend to just go with approximating the ratios in proportion to the
distance from the fixed axle, (or centre between them if more than 1). This
isn't totally accurate, but since when has LEGO ever been totally accurate??
