Umm? There are actually only 2 specialised parts - the CV joint and the 3
pin hub with steering arms - (of which you need 4 of each) in the mechanism
that arn't "commonly" available in other sets. The rest of the mechanism is
universal joints, new style diffs, 16t gears with clutch, driving rings,
driving extn ring and new style double bevels. All the former are in sets
with the big cars and space shuttle, while the double bevels are pretty
common now. And again, all of these parts can be acquired from BrickLink.

I'm sorry to say that I don't think that having the manual itself is
going to help much. The 8466 achieves 4wd and steering by using some
very specialized parts. You can't easily achieve the same effect
using elements from other sets.
