I've built a multi-function transmission/transfer-case for a Jeep.
It includes a 4-speed transmission, which is then routed to a 2-speed
transfer case. The 2-speed is exactly as ROSCO describes it. The output
is then routed to the central diff, which has a 'technic driving ring'

on one side. Sliding the driving ring into the diff locks one of the
outputs to the diff housing, thereby locking the diff.
I'll try to post some pics on Brickshelf soon.
Unfortunately, the transmission is the only functional and complete
part of my Jeep; the rest of the Jeep is in various stages of completion.
