I must confess that what is on offer these days *IS* different.

In lugnet.technic, Nicholas McNeely writes:
I too wonder where the good Technic stuff is.  What happened to all the sets
of yester year that had bricks and beams and studs?  None of the recent
stuff even interests me.  Sets such as the 8466 and 8458 don't even look
like Lego sets.  I've not seen them up close, but I can't see a single beam
in pictures of either one.  These sets do not make me want to buy them.

But I think you may be over-reacting to the (lack of?) merit of some of
these new sets.

We are being asked to revisit some assumptions about how things are put
together. Yes, there are fewer Technic 1xN beams in proportion to other
parts. But the other parts, which constitute very basic and cleverly thought
out basic structural pieces just go together differently. Buying some of
these newer sets is the best "tutorial" you can have to see how the set
designers intend the pieces to be used. I have had a number of email based
dialogs with quite a few Technic enthusiasts out there who all admit that
they are looking forward to really learning the new stuff in order to get to
the same level of proficiency with it that they have acquired with the old
stuff. And knowing how expert some of them are, I can't wait to see what
shows up over the next weeks and months!

You can still buy old parts if you must- rereleased sets from LD, older sets
on ebay, bricklink etc etc. What frustrates me is how long it is taking TLC
to come across with the whole range of new stuff - studless beams in all the
different lengths, new and clever little joiner pieces etc etc.

You can make nice stuff with these new parts - it just takes a fresh
approach I think.
