I too wonder where the good Technic stuff is. What happened to all the sets
of yester year that had bricks and beams and studs? None of the recent
stuff even interests me. Sets such as the 8466 and 8458 don't even look
like Lego sets. I've not seen them up close, but I can't see a single beam
in pictures of either one. These sets do not make me want to buy them.
Yesterday at Target, the only sets that I would halfway consider 'Technic'
were the Star Wars figures (I don't consider Bionicle to be Technic). Target
used to carry 9V motors and Mindstorms and other real Technic. Toys 'R' Us
also displays a disappointing assortment of Technic.
What happened to the sets such as the Space Shuttle (8480), the original
Super Car (8880), the Future Car (8437), or the Search Sub (8250 & 8299)?
Those sets look like Lego. They are fun sets and offer a variety of useful
pieces. And where are any sets that have pneumatics? The past brought us
several such sets: Tow Truck (8462), Pneumatic Crane (8460), Pneumatic Log
Loader (8443), and Airtech Claw Rig (8868)(one of my top 3 favorite sets).
Looking back through the scans of old catalogs at Brickshelf
(http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/), the past four years have been rather
disappointing in the selection of Technic sets. In 1998 and before, there
was a much wider and more satisfying choice of sets. What has happened?
With the rollout of the Mindstorms, I think the market for Technic would be
greater than ever. I reentered Lego and Technic because of Minstorms, and I
am sure several others either restarted their hobby or joined the Lego
community for the first time. Today, there are no good Technic sets to
accent a Mindstorm user's collection.
I liked what Lego did with the reissue of the Pneumatic Front End Loader
(8459 / 8464), but I did not think the 8464 was available for very long at
all. If Lego did this with the Space Shuttle, they couldn't keep up with
demand. I would buy two without hesitation. It is that good of a set.
Also, will we ever see bulk Technic beams from S@H? I know I would buy
several packages if they were made available.
Thank you for listening to me. At the very least I have vented my
frustration and perhaps something can come out of my frustration and that
which I feel other diehard Technic fans must also be feeling.

| I must confess that what is on offer these days *IS* different. (...) But I think you may be over-reacting to the (lack of?) merit of some of these new sets. We are being asked to revisit some assumptions about how things are put together. Yes, (...) (22 years ago, 5-Jul-02, to lugnet.technic)
