Duq,

As I know you live in the netherlands, at V&D in den haag there is still 1
modelteam Race-truck (5563) available,
So if you have a change go and get it.

Assuming my loving partner would buy me a big set of Lego (Silver Champ • last
x-mas, 8448 birthday) there's really only one big set at the moment, and
that's 8466, the off-roader.
Now if I tell a bit about my thoughts about the previous two big cars, I
hope I can get some advice on whether or not to ask Santa for this • one.....

I found the Silver Champ impressive, like most of us, and technically
boring, like most of us. The drive train has had enought coverage, but I'm
more worried about the steering. With such big wheels, Lego still didn't
manage to get the pivot point inside the tyre. As a result the steering • was
unplayably heavy. Plus there was quite some play in the steering.

The Supercar I found nice, but not the best looking ever. I guess head to
head I'd go for 8880, but I'd have to get one of them first to find out.
Technically though it's a cool thing. I'm really impressed with the • gearbox
design. Unfortunately I wasn't as impressed with..... the steering. It's
bad. Really bad. Trying to get so many functions in such a small space • means
there's an appalling amount of play. In every direction and angle you can
move the front wheels miles without affecting the steering wheel or the
other wheel.

On to the new kid on the block. The looks don't do it for me. I don't like
the colour, and don'r need more tubes. And I hate those clear cylinder
blocks (anyone want to swap 24 of them for grey ones?). As the steering is
based on 8448's but now with an extra function I expect stability there to
be even worse (tell me if I'm wrong). So what I want to know is, what's • the
brick selection like? Is there any interesting Lego in that box? Is there • a
decent alternative model?

Other options. Maybe there's a power puller left on a shelf somewhere. But
then I'd get another skipload of those cylinders again, and only two big
tyres. The model team racing truck? Now there's an idea. If only there • were
any left... It seems MT has been left to die recently...
Any other sets that might be good on parts/price?

Any help/tips appreciated.

Duq (slightly desillusioned)
