Probably over 50... but this is simply speculation.

In Meccano's Golden Age, LEGO did not exist.

If you compare the top-of-the-line LEGO Technic pieces and building
techniques, you won't quite measure up to some of the things that are
possible with Meccano at its best. You can do very well, but really can't
create the tight tolerances and extreme durability that you can when you're
using steel versus plastic. That said, to put together even a small Meccano
model of any complexity would require almost 100% purchasing of after-market
pieces. Tough to aquire and very expensive.

I think the comparisons are still interesting. However, it's always best to
remember that Meccano and LEGO are two different types of building systems.
When you're building a desk, you don't often use concrete. And when putting
together a parking garage you hardly ever use 2 x 4's any more. The point
being that each system has its merits and each has its strengths and
weaknesses. Meccano's only real draw-back is that it is nearly extinct.
LEGO is at least available at retail... for now.
