This was a big drawback for this set and one of the worst design flaws I've
seen in any Lego Technic set.  The steering just doesn't work at all.  The
linkage is bent too much down by the front wheels.  There's got to be a
better solution.  I'll have to experiment.

I agree that the steering is pretty dubious for two reasons:

1) The angle range of the front wheels is very small, and the front wheels do
not grip well;
2) There is no differential between the rear wheels, which do grip well.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see where this is going to lead.
However, I was able to get the model to veer slightly to the side the wheels
were steered when running on carpet.

In saying this, the steering is pretty irrelevant, as I gather the front wheels
spend most of their time off the ground when the vehicle is working properly
anyway. I assume any directional control in the real vehicle  is done by varying
the torque supplied to each of the rear wheels..?

There is some cool footage in the
video and it would have been halfway interesting with some dialogue.

Perhaps they couldn't justify the expense of including different versions with
different language for each country in the world? After all, the rest of the kit
is nationality agnostic.

(...) Yes. If my memory serves me well, the common power puller has two break pedals, one for each rear wheel :) /Tobbe (24 years ago, 4-Feb-01, to lugnet.technic)

(...) I recently got this set as well and liked it fairly well as well. I'm not sure I'd pay $130 dollars though. $99 was a steep enough price point. Lets face it, with these large Technic sets the majority of pieces are friction pegs, not the more (...) (24 years ago, 31-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)
