Check out the changes. The new gear is on top. I just noticed this when
trying to build a large crankshaft, and found you can no longer attach axles
on the off-center cross position.

When did this happen?

I first noticed the new type in a parts pack
bought from S@H in November 98.

Not nice at all, e.g. old square piston engines
as done in official models won't be possible with these.

- Though personally, I had those engine parts for years
w/o an official model to point out that the cross holes
should be used, and made (shorter-stroke) crankshafts
using the round holes. Unless the gears are very new and tight,
this requires an axle with 8-gears (a pretend "camshaft",
though it's nothing of the sort) to go along the crankshaft
to keep it from deforming. Imagine my surprise when I got
8859 and saw its engine construction.
HOWEVER, crankshafts made the TLC way only have 0/180/0/etc.
offsets, which doesn't make for a very interesting engine
if there are more than 2 cylinders in line.
Using the round holes, 90-degree offsets are possible,
which looks (and sounds) a lot better.
The new cranks and pistons have the same limitation, but
90-degree offsets now require a part modification (cutting
the axle on the grey crank down to 1/2 or making a 1-axle)
or a 1-wide gap between cylinders whereever the offset
is 90 degrees (i.e. at least once for I3/I4/V6/V8 engines).
