I tried something a bit unusual to this end with a some znap axles John
Barnes sent me. It actually worked quite well, although the drive train took
a wee bit of torque to turn - the new gear motors managed it with no
difficulty at a gear ratio of 1:9 though. The steering also took a bit of a
push - it wouldn't be good for "manual" steering, but again a gear motor
moved the rack easily. I have a couple of pictures here:

The second differential was just a "stub" for the centre diff in a 4wd
mechanism; it should be ignored in these pictures. In addition, John has
pointed out that the znap axles are rubbing against one of the beams, which
will probably result in wear.

| Has anyone come up with a design for a steerable live axle? With the spacing needed for the differential and the substructure for the wheel pinnions, I have been unsuccessful in building a modular axle that is narrow enough for practical use. Any (...) (24 years ago, 25-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)
