This is now a recognised problem. At
http://www.lego.com/advanced/m6p1.asp
I found:
QUESTION: There are two spring-loaded
transparent elements that open the doors
and pull the roof of the Supercar on and off.
Without any overloading or misuse, one of
these elements in my model broke. How
can that happen?
ANSWER: It may have broke because the
spring pushed out a weak plastic piece in
the bottom of the cylinder. This problem is
found in a small percentage of the first
shipment of these plastic pieces. Since
then, we have changed the plastic pieces,
so they cannot be broken by the spring. If
you have a broken element, contact your
local LEGO sales office for a new
replacement one.

| I opened the wing doors on my super car today only to find that one air damper had shattered internally and would not operate. I inspected the other one and those on 8446 and 8447 and found they too were broken, but not to the point of not working. (...) (25 years ago, 14-Nov-99, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.loc.uk)
