Question about gearing Power Functions-based trains

I've noticed that because the Emerald Night's two sets of driver wheels are locked together, the engine struggles to go around corners: the outer wheels have further to turn, so the wheels slip and the engine's movement becomes jerky. Would it be (...) (15 years ago, 19-Jan-10, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.technic, lugnet.robotics, FTX)

  Some help or advice requested

Hi all. I am currently working on a project (to be revealed in due course!) and I've come across something of a stumbling block. I have a tray that is constrained to move in one dimension, and a series of short liftarms under the tray, all rotating (...) (15 years ago, 19-Jan-10, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Please help me identify this brick!

(...) (URL) a bit early for Mindstorms. I've only got a passing familiarity with the 4.5v system, but I believe that any parts that feature that type of 3-prong socket are designed for 4.5v power. All Mindstorms parts use either the 2x2x2/3 electric (...) (15 years ago, 19-Jan-10, to lugnet.technic)

Please help me identify this brick!

Hi, I've got a black 3x2 block in my large mixed box of Technic, but I'm not sure what it does! The block has a power cable socket in the top, and a smooth axle hole through it, as well as a smaller hole on one side. I've looked through the various (...) (URL) Hi folks Last fall we had the swine flu outbreak - it spread here too, of course, and I fell ill too. While my symptoms remained vague, I was in bed for a week. And one week in bed tends to be kind of boring. So I took my brick boxes onto a (...) (15 years ago, 17-Jan-10, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.cad, FTX)

(...) More pictures and LDraw file are now available. (URL) (15 years ago, 11-Jan-10, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

  Non-standard uses for parts

(...) A corollary to this (that I discovered yesterday - apologies if this is already well known) is that you can use a bushing to lock a driving ring to the axle - the same notches that allow the bushing to fit between four studs will act as the (...)   Re: Volunteers to build and test twin stick transmission?

(...) Hi Ari, I'd love to build it. No lack of necessary parts here. Could you post (or send me) a copy of the LDraw file you took that screenshot from? Never mind if it's incomplete. It's just easier to build if I can see it from different angles. (...) (15 years ago, 7-Jan-10, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Volunteers to build and test twin stick transmission?

Hi, here is an idea to build a good old fashioned twin stick truck transmission. I don't have enough synchro parts so I can't build this myself. Is there any volunteers to build and test it? :) (URL) Schematics> (URL) Twin Stick 5x4> More accurate (...) (15 years ago, 7-Jan-10, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

  Re: Motorized sausage

(...) Very nice! There have been many prototype engines designed using similar techniques in the past, there's a page about them (URL). ROSCO (15 years ago, 30-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

  Motorized sausage

OK, here comes another one! (2 URLs) This has a new (?) method of locomotion - it rolls along just by changing its shape. The wheels are fixed to the body and do not rotate. In principle you could enclose the whole thing in a plastic bag and it (...) (15 years ago, 30-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.robotics, lugnet.announce.moc, FTX)

I guess it's also possible that not all friction pins are alike (might be interesting to test this...) (...) (15 years ago, 30-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Automatic synchro drive

I'm glad this little model is generating so much excitement! ;-) (...) Interesting to hear I'm not the only one to experience these issues with turntables! (In a second-hand technic set I once bought, someone had inserted ball bearings inside the (...) (15 years ago, 30-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Automatic synchro drive

(...) I finished mine just now (made a video but can't find the cable to connect my PDA to the computer) and a ran into similar issues. I lubed my turntables after reading your comment Philo, and it improved things slightly, but I also found that (...) (15 years ago, 29-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Automatic synchro drive

(...) Yes, there are many possible sources of frictions differences, especially in the turntables, quite sensitive to assembly (I had to lubricate two of them). After making sure that all parts were correctly aligned and fully plugged, it worked (...) (15 years ago, 29-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Automatic synchro drive

(...) Cool! It feels strange to see it in someone else's house! :-) It looks as if you added some extra gears on the top. Is that just for decoration, or to increase the friction to prevent unwanted turning? (At one point I decided I needed that, (...) (15 years ago, 28-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)

Thanks again for sharing! I now have an Automatic Synchro Drive wandering in my kitchen... (URL) Philo (15 years ago, 28-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

  Re: Automatic synchro drive

(...) Philo beat me to it, but I was also going to suggest you include unofficial parts to make sure everyone can see the file as it was intended. I'll take advantage of this occasion to fervently hope the hailfire wheel will be on the parts tracker (...) (15 years ago, 28-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)

  Re: Automatic synchro drive

An excellent adaptation of a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing - especially the mpd. BTW, it would be a good idea to include unofficial parts in the mpd. You can do that using MPDwizard ((URL) This way your mpd will remain readable even if (...) (15 years ago, 28-Dec-09, to lugnet.technic)
