Ross-
Looking at Nathans crab design, I realized that the center steering
mechanism resembles a differential. Realizing this I came up with a sketch
(since thats all Im able to do until I move into a house and open my legos)
using a differential and a clutch/ring gear setup, the end result; a single
fixed steering column with a small gearshift that would implement the crab
steer. I will post my sketch of this soon.

Sorry to eavesdrop, but would your revised version of my idea be something I
could implement on the telehandler? I thought about moving the mechanism to the
cabin. No matter how I do it, the more play in the gears- the less aligned and
effective the steering will be. Any play more than a few degrees is bad.
Guess what?- An idea of how to keep the hoses to the piston that tilts the fork
at the end of the boom taught. I call it the 1/2 way method. The hoses only
go 1/2 way up the extention arm, and then are connected to solid lines up to the
end. The hoses are taught while it is fully extended and while it is fully
retracted. They only hang loose while it is 1/2 way extended, and not very
much. A chain driven reel to reel up the hoses is commonly used, but that would
be too heavy for my boom, so I used this idea. It looks ugly, but works very
well. I will put pictures on the site to show you when it is done. Sorry if I
have been vague.

| Nathan- Do you have a website? If so, what's the address? BTW, I'm having a bit of trouble posting my crab steering sketch, so I just went ahead and sent you the pic via email. Tell me what you think. (20 years ago, 29-Oct-04, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
