Ross-
Looking at Nathans crab design, I realized that the center steering
mechanism resembles a differential. Realizing this I came up with a sketch
(since thats all Im able to do until I move into a house and open my legos)
using a differential and a clutch/ring gear setup, the end result; a single
fixed steering column with a small gearshift that would implement the crab
steer. I will post my sketch of this soon.

Theres a couple of problems with that technique:
- The clutch gear has a lot of inherent backlash, which will make the steering not very responsive
- you have to make sure the wheels are centred when you switch the clutch to get back to straight steering
I worked out a basic proof of concept idea to alleviate problem 2
here but have never implemented it
in a MOC. It would have a steering wheel turning the front axles as normal, and
a second wheel or lever giving infinite adjustment between crab & normal on the
rear wheels.

| Ross- I have designed the gearing mechanism for the crab steering. It is a redesigned version of my original crab steer design. As per your questions about this; 1) I understand the clutch gear has a backlash. I have tried to fix this problem by (...) (20 years ago, 30-Oct-04, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
