Ross-
Looking at Nathans crab design, I realized that the center steering mechanism
resembles a differential. Realizing this I came up with a sketch (since thats
all Im able to do until I move into a house and open my legos) using a
differential and a clutch/ring gear setup, the end result; a single fixed
steering column with a small gearshift that would implement the crab steer. I
will post my sketch of this soon.

There's a couple of problems with that technique: The clutch gear has a lot of inherent backlash, which will make the steering not very responsive you have to make sure the wheels are centred when you switch the clutch to get back to straight (...) Incidentally, Nathan's design can be used with 2 fixed steering wheels: reverse the rear steering bar, so that tilting the "steering column" now operates crab steering mode remove the knob on (...)
