I was aiming to be able to lift the a-frame mechanically, but so far have found no solution. I would have liked to use pneumatics, but with the a-frame being about 90 studs long, and weighing in about 400g, I just can’t find a way to get the required pushing power. I’ve also tried some mechanical lifting mechanisms, so far without luck.

Most real cranes ose hydraulics, you can just see the green lifters in this pic. Note this function is only required when setting up and packing up - while the a-frame is connected to the boom or derrick, the cable is all that’s required.

So my question is this: Do you think it is a cop-out to use the Hand Of God for lifting the a-frame? I think all the big LEGO cranes I’ve ever seen utilise the HOG, but can anyone think of a solution that isn’t likely to pull the whole crane apart?

Any advice welcome :)

A friend of mine is building the Liebherr LGD1800 of Riga Mainz (the Spacelifter).

He tried to lift the A-frame with Technic beams + gear racks. He used 12V motors (the round ones). It didn’t work very well. His crane is on scale 1:15/16, based on the Black Cat wheels (unfortunately no pictures).

Your crane is much bigger. I don’t think it’s manageble with LEGO pieces. I would like to build the Sennebogen 5500HDSL but I don’t think I will try to build that mechanism. And I don’t think I will have enough space for it.

Anyway, your crane looks stunning. I’m curious how you will succeed in making the beam sections.

(...) Hmmmm. I just looked closely at that pic, and can see the a-frame line is reversed once (goes across to opposite side of pulley). I've noticed some cranes do this, and some don't - some do it more than once - none of the DEMAG ones I've seen (...) (20 years ago, 16-May-04, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
