Hi Joakim,

The actual gearbox does have 3 gears, but according to the instructions it only uses 2 at a time. The reason for this I think is:
  1. Without the motor, 1st gear causes the engine to rotate too quickly, and can cause damage to axles. I actually had one of the pistons fly off, and break off the entire engine block when I tried pushing it once in 1st gear;
  2. With the motor, 3rd gear is useless as the 4.5v motor (as per the instructions) is not powerful enough to drive it in this gear.
However, of course with more powerful motors now available, and a little experimentation, I see no reason why it should not run with 3 gears :) just use the appropriate plates as described by David.
