Hi, I´m having a slight problem building the gearbox on the 8860...
How many gears is it supposed to have? It is technically able to have 3, but
if you follow the instructions its impossible to use more than 2.
Check this scan of page 16 out and compare the 3 pictures of the gearbox
(Well, not exactly the gearbox but the gear change mechanism in the blue
box):

Anyone that remembers how they actually built it?

Hi Joakim,
The actual gearbox does have 3 gears, but according to the instructions it only
uses 2 at a time. The reason for this I think is:
- Without the motor, 1st gear causes the engine to rotate too quickly, and can cause damage to axles. I actually had one of the pistons fly off, and break off the entire engine block when I tried pushing it once in 1st gear;
- With the motor, 3rd gear is useless as the 4.5v motor (as per the instructions) is not powerful enough to drive it in this gear.
However, of course with more powerful motors now available, and a little
experimentation, I see no reason why it should not run with 3 gears :) just use
the appropriate plates as described by David.
