    Gearbox 8860 trouble —Joakim Olsson
   Hi, I´m having a slight problem building the gearbox on the 8860... How many gears is it supposed to have? It is technically able to have 3, but if you follow the instructions its impossible to use more than 2. Check this scan of page 16 out and (...) (21 years ago, 27-Dec-03, to lugnet.technic)

     (...) remove the 2x4 plate, then use whatever blue plates so that the stick shift can be in 3 separate positions I built this car with 3 gears many years ago... that's how I did it (iirc ;) ) Dave K (21 years ago, 27-Dec-03, to lugnet.technic)

Step 17--don't put the 2x3 plate in, instead, use a 2x2 plate and don't cover up the third space for the stick shift... Rest of the steps are fine. Hope (...) I suspected that I had to use my brain instead of following the instructions. ;-) When I build sets I´m a Lego-purist and want to build exactly as (...)      (...) I remember this too, Christmas of 1980 I think it was. Serious nostalgia here! I think the reason for the cover was that the engine fairly rattles along when you push the car in the lowest gear, which is fine as long as you have built the (...)    (...) Hi Joakim, The actual gearbox does have 3 gears, but according to the instructions it only uses 2 at a time. The reason for this I think is: Without the motor, 1st gear causes the engine to rotate too quickly, and can cause damage to axles. I (...) (21 years ago, 2-Jan-04, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
