Those are exellent references and you can learn well from them.
I'll throw in my personal experience just for fun here. I used two air tanks on
my R996 excavator (http://www.texbrick.com/creations/r996) and a compressor that
had two small pneumatic "pumps".
When operating the model, it took a long while for the tanks to charge up, and
then they were depleated rather quickly. I could raise the boom maybe two times.
At Brickfest 2002, Jennifer Clark (http://www.genuinemodels.com) and I
experiemented by adding an additional compressor (hers) and bypassing the tanks
in the model. The result was improved performance and better responsiveness in
the pneumatics.
Her philosophy was to not use air tanks and size your compressor appropriately.
After seeing our "experiment", I agree.
