My second glider, Drat Soarer, is now up:

Here are some two links to larger pictures:

Its final glide distance was a max of 31ft, average under good temperatures
30ft. I figured out that if its really hot out (its been about 100 degrees F in
my area) the lego parts get soft and lose their effectiveness while flying. The
average distance under the hot sun dropped to about 23-25ft.

My next version should be a biplane. However at the same time I will be trying
to figure out a good motor mount/prop system to attach to later designs.

Well progress seems to be going well, I have almost doubled the flight distance
from 18.5ft to 31ft. Hopefully the biplane will be able to get to at least 40ft
and I'm hoping for 50ft. Once I figure out a good biplane design then I will
start trying to figure out a way to make the wings the airfoil shape. I'm also
thinking about trying to build a few rubber band powered prop systems to see how
much they add to the distance. I might do this before the biplane, I have not
decided yet. One reason is I have to wait for my second Mars set to come so I
can build the second wing. Well as allways any comments are welcomed.

Also does any one know of some good links to ultralight planes? I'm still
looking for some good designs that I might be able to get ideas from.

And does any one know of a way to build a good prop for an airplane? I thought
that perhaps some one has built one for a model of an airplane. Once I figure
this out then I think I can build a powered one, the prop design is the main
thing holding me back.

(...) Daron, Congrats on the continued development, but I don't know why you want to make a biplane, except for kicks. The most efficient wing, from a drag reducing perspective, is a long thing one (think gliders, and MacReady's man powered planes). (...) (21 years ago, 1-Aug-03, to lugnet.technic)
