Hi,
In the latest Shop at Home catalog (US version), the description of this new
Technic set (aviation fire truck) says that "This detailed model features a
newly developped steering mechanism".
Does anybody know what this is about? Are any new, special, parts involved? Is
it worth buying this set just for the steering system?

Greetings,

David,

I got to see one of these up close at the Lego Outlet in the Discovery Mills
Shopping Center in Atlanta, GA. I believe the reference refers to the fact that
the front two sets of two wheels turn in the direction of the intended turn
(left for left) and the back set (the last set of the two sets seen in back)
turns in the opposite direction of the turn (right for a left turn) enabling the
fire truck to turn in a tighter turning radius than might be possible.

The other set of wheels in the back, the ones forward of the rear turning
wheels, drives the engine (or is it the other way around ;^> ).

I was not able to inspect for different or new pieces and I really have no idea
how the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels. I will
say that I think that this is not the first time that LEGO designers have done
this. I seem to recall a crane or other vehicle that could do this. Or I might
be thinking of someone's web site that had done this to a vehicle of their own
design.

Does anyone know the reference of remember the vehicle?

(...) See Crane 8460, instr. pages 15-17 give a clear view how it's done. so, if lego claims to have 'a new steering principle' I hope they don't refer to opposite-turning-rear-wheels. :-) Klaas (21 years ago, 21-Jul-03, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Well, it's not the first time they have incorporated reverse-steering in the back wheel, (URL) is it the first time they have made varying angle dual front wheels steering, (or varying angle steered dual rear wheels) (URL) it's the first time (...)
