Well, I found out how the motor works which is the main reason I bought the set. As Huw Millington rightly pointed out, it relies on the integrated battery and motor "lump" with the reversing switch on the top. The forward/reverse action is (...) (22 years ago, 9-Sep-02, to lugnet.technic)

I completed 8461 today, and can now summarise the differences between it and 8458. The obvious difference is of course the use of a new style of panel. There are two sizes, in left and right, of course. Their designated panel numbers (for those that (...) (22 years ago, 8-Sep-02, to lugnet.technic)

Umm? There are actually only 2 specialised parts - the CV joint and the 3 pin hub with steering arms - (of which you need 4 of each) in the mechanism that arn't "commonly" available in other sets. The rest of the mechanism is universal joints, new (...) (22 years ago, 8-Sep-02, to lugnet.technic)
