The upside to stacking is that it not only looks neater and takes up less
space, but it allows you to quickly inventory what you have and retrieve
certain pieces when you're building.

The downside is that I've found small cracks in many pieces that have been
stacked for a long time, and the cracks always appear where another brick was
connected. Surprisingly, even with cracks many of the pieces hold together just
fine.

Pieces I have found cracks in:

1x1 bricks
1x2 bricks
1x1 brick with inset side stud
2x2 clear slope (Have one display project where I think everyone of them
cracked)
minifig legs (always in the back)
