I have just started reaching the point where it is a chore to store my LEGO, and
I have been coming up with my own storage solutions given my space restrictions.

The thing that faces me is that I have no one area reserved for LEGO building,
such as a garage or spare room or whatever.  I mostly just take what I need to
the table and begin working, annexing whatever floor or counterspace nearby that
I require as I go along.

What this has brought about is a definite need for advance planning and piece
selection.  I only really have room to put out the elements I think I'm gonna be
working with.  My solution was to purchase an inexpensive plastic storage unit
with a bunch of small drawers in them (I found one when looking for bead storage
solutions for my girlfriend's jewelry and crafting).  I consider this my "up to
the plate" building materials, and I fill the limited space it offers with the
types of pieces I like to use often and ones I would like to use more of,
sometimes with a specific color set I want to work with.

This unit can sit near me without taking up a ton of space, and provides a good
selection of "go-to" pieces to work with.

Where this solution really shines is for free building.  I can just sit down
with a pre-selected grouping of elements, and just start building things or
trying new concepts with what I have in front of me.  It starts to stretch your
imagination on new ways to combine the same set of bricks, and as soon as it
gets stale, you can change some pieces around from your larger collection.

Enjoy your Lego!

Best advice ever.

X-fut to .storage, but this is a general issue most of us deal with as
collectors and fans. So it could go in either group I guess.
