I agree with Eric's comment about keeping a single colour out.
I have roughly 1000 lbs of Lego in the basement room and have the following
rough rules that I follow.
1) I keep my basic bricks (in basic colours RYBW) in large tubs so I can
easily bring them out when necessary.

2) I keep other bricks sorted by colour whenever possible... especially
bricks and plates.
3) I keep a fair sized pile of assorted stuff around so I don't have to
keep raiding sorted boxes.

4) I keep whatever colour I'm working on out in a separate room (currently tan)

5) And of course keep the really large Lego bricks in a separate pile :-)
