Warped baseplates: can they be restored to flatness?

A few months back I discovered my cache of baseplates from when I was a kid.
Unfortunately, some of the smaller ones (8 x 16) were bowed and/or warped.  I
tried pressing them in the pages of a large book for a month, but on looking
this evening, they still have a bow to them.

Does anyone have any siggestions on restoring warped baseplates to their
original shape?

(...) Build heavy models on top of them. Ha, ha. I'm afraid I can't think of anything else. How did they get warped? Were they not stacked flat? -Teddy (20 years ago, 24-May-04, to lugnet.storage)
