Thanks, Larry! The biggest trick was getting everything to line up so that the parts moved without bumping into each, and also so that they’d fit snugly up against each other in both modes. Adding or removing a single plate of height in any direction can throw the alignment off completely in so many different ways, so it was just one big effort in trial and error. I think that’s probably why I smashed the first version!

Originally, the legs were the black Technic spider legs from the Aragog Harry Potter sets. When folded up, they made for some pretty clever wings, but it gave the ship more an organic look than I really wanted. The tradeoff, though, with the grey hinged legs that it has now is a less organic looking spider -- he looks more like one of the Matrix squiddies than a living creature.

there is a step or two I didn’t follow.

I actually did forget to take a shot of a pretty important step. It falls in between xwing-14.jpg and xwing-15.jpg, and it shows how the two halves of the nose section of the fighter (the back of the bug) rotate back before turning forward. I’ve taken a new photo and thrown it in there (xwing-14b.jpg).
