It was hard to get when it was in stores.

I suspect it was particularly popular with people buying LEGO for kids. It
was effectively a cheap substitute for the relatively expensive X Wing set,
but still contained Luke, a lightsabre, other figs, a cool 'ship' etc.

A couple of times soon after the SW sets were released, I saw kids looking
at the X Wing, and parents persuading them to be happy with a Snowspeeder
instead.

This is not to detract from the quality/value of the model, just to go some
way to explaining why it dissappeared so quickly.
