It was hard to get when it was in stores. Then it was discontinued early.
Many who thought they could wait to get it were caught off gaurd with the
early discontinuation of the set. What was left was horded and the people
who missed out flooded ebay. Few suppliers kept a stock because they wanted
to take advantage of the high sell prices. When the supply dwindled, the
prices even went higher. Now they rest at 40 - 50 USD each.
Also notable reasons include thet fact that this set is chock full of great
pieces and at only 20 USD it was a great price for such a great set. The
play value is awesome. The snowspeeder, aside from the X-Wing and Millenium
Falcon, is by far the most recognized vehicle from SW and many people want
it just for that. Finally, though just a small factor, the entire SW line
is a line that people like to complete the entire collection. Just because
of this, all SW sets are sought after.
Hope that answers the question.
