    Re: Building habits —Anthony Babington
...I've been giving serious thought to sorting my collection, even if only by color. lazy though I am, i know that all my really cool pieces are cowering in fear at the bottom of the huge (60 gallons) tub which houses the bulk of my collection. (...) (23 years ago, 2-Apr-01, to lugnet.starwars, lugnet.space, lugnet.build)

        Re: Building habits —Steve Lane
(...) I've looked into this and apparently color sensors can only differentiate between black, white and grey which to me was really bad news. The £150 spent on mindstorms to build a sorter would also be better spent on more technic and a bit of (...) (23 years ago, 2-Apr-01, to lugnet.starwars, lugnet.space, lugnet.build)

         Re: Building habits —Kevin Wanner
(...) to bad : ( but as for me it I have sorted my pieces out by color. it's nice because there are less pieces to look through. -Kevin W. (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.starwars, lugnet.space, lugnet.build)

Re: Building habits —William R. Ward
(...) If you're going to sort them, DON'T do it by color. It's the most obvious choice, but it's a bad idea. Sort by size and type instead. Think of it this way: Say you want a blue 1x4 brick. Would you rather dig through a pile of blue bricks, or a (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.starwars, lugnet.space, lugnet.build, lugnet.storage)

        Re: Building habits —Steven Coallier
(...) I think this will depend slightly on the size of your collection. As my collection has grown, I have gone to sorting by color to sorting by color _and_ size. That way, I don't have to dig through anything! Exceptions are when a piece is scarce (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

Re: Building habits —William R. Ward
(...) I have a big enough collection to do that, but I've resisted, because when I take apart a model I don't want to have quite so many places to put things. As it is I have only 21 bins in total - though I do use Plano boxes for the little Technic (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

        Re: Building habits —Kevin Wanner
(...) I haven't thought about doing it by size but it is hard to find some pieces when every thing is the same color. One helpful thing is that in some containers I have two colors (red + blue gray + yellow) -Kevin W. (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

        Re: Building habits —Kevin Wanner
(...) Never thought about doing it by shape. I do have a problem finding some things because every thing is the same color. -Kevin W. (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.starwars)

        Re: Building habits —Jonathan Dallas
(...) light sensors can, but not very well. Vision command can and if you do make an automatic sorter let me know. ;-) (...) Well that's just going to far. Maybe I'm miss reading this, but I would not suggest to someone who says he's lazy to sort by (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

Re: Building habits —William R. Ward
(...) To clarify, I mean don't sort *only* by color. Putting 6x16 plates in with 1x1 bricks and everything in between, all of one color, makes it a lot harder to find something. It sounds from your description that you yourself sort by size/shape, (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

Re: Building habits (Warning: Long-Winded!) —Chris Phillips
In lugnet.storage, Jonathan Dallas writes: <snip!> (...) My question to you is: where do you find the time NOT to sort your collection? My LEGO collection was still relatively small (~ 5,000 pieces) when I realized just how much time I was spending (...) (23 years ago, 25-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

Re: Building habits (Warning: Long-Winded!) —Richard W. Schamus
(...) <HUGE SNIP> (only for the cause of breviety) I'd like to chime in here. I fully agree with Chris here, and this is the reason why. I've been told I'm in the top 10 of documented set accumulation, (I haven't actually researched this, too busy (...) (23 years ago, 25-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

Re: Building habits —John D. Forinash
(...) Odd. I never did the sort-by-color thing, but I wouldn't've guessed this would be a problem-- I don't tend to build models that are all one piece... :) On the other hand, maybe I do. I use 1x4s a lot more often now that they're easier to find, (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

        Re: Building habits —Frederick Grondy
(...) Well, I have a rather substantial collection and I sort by color, with a few exceptions (all my castle walls and doors together, all trans pieces in one big 2 gallon bag, and various odd ball pieces/more than one color together). This is the (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-01, to lugnet.storage)

Re: Building habits —William R. Ward
(...) Maybe that's the big difference - I rarely have any particular plan when i start building. I start by fidgeting with some random parts, and then an idea starts to bloom, and eventually it turns into a model (usually a spacecraft). Sometimes I (...)
