  Universal Docking Ring ideas?

I'm trying to invent a good docking system for my spacecraft. Before I invest too much time and effort into it, I'd like to first see what other people have come up with. Are there any of you out there who have a good design for a docking ring, (...) (23 years ago, 6-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

One quick note: for shuttles, put the docking rings behind a hatch (or hatches). And put the hatch on the upper surface of the vessel. It would be really cool if the hatch(es) can open all the way, and the docking ring would slide outward, to better (...) (23 years ago, 6-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

  Re: Universal Docking Ring ideas?

(...) If we assume that repulsorlift technology (or the equivalent) exists, this becomes less of a problem; you don't use the atmosphere as a brake on re-entry. You can go through the atmosphere without generating lots of heat; heck, back in 1960 a (...) (23 years ago, 6-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

  Re: Universal Docking Ring ideas?

(...) The design of the door is a separate issue - although that was a very clever sliding door, I don't know if I'd use it because it doesn't look like it would be "airtight". But no matter what type of door used, the size and shape of the (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

  Re: Universal Docking Ring ideas?

(...) That would be cool. But it would be bulky, which is why I objected to that idea in my initial post. I've toyed with the idea of using the Technic pieces which are 3 studs long and are 2/3 friction-pin and 1/3 axle hole connector. Lego uses (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

(...) I don't assume any such thing. I prefer to follow the assumption that while reaction engines will improve, there won't be a significant change in the types of technologies available. (...) Well I think that if the docking collar allows docking (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

  Re: Universal Docking Ring ideas?

(...) What about having different sized docking rings? A small one for mini-figs and small equipment, and larger ones for cargo transports and carriers to load and offload big materials. (...) It would definetly be more convient if all rings could (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

  Re: Universal Docking Ring ideas?

(...) Well, bulky is in the eye of the beholder, so I guess I can't help you much there. For STO craft, maybe you could put the docking port in either the nose or the tail of the craft. If it's in the nose, put the nosecone on a hinge to (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

  Re: Universal Docking Ring ideas?

(...) The benefit to gendered rings is that it is possible to dock in more positions. If all four of those mounting points are male or all female, then you have four orientations of the two ships to pick from. With ungendered rings, you have at most (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)
