I figured it was time to start making some civilian ships to work into my space fleet and here is the first big one, a civilian space liner and another resident of the New Omicron Republic:

bricklink folder: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=126112

The details: -faster than light civilian transport capable of landing on planets or docking at space stations -crew of 3 (2 in the cockpit and one to serve you your overpriced martini) -capable of seating 8 in first class and 30 unhappy people in coach -complete with overhead storage, curtain for first class, bathroom in back, galley, and a magazine rack. -retractable landing gear which came out far cooler than I ever thought possible.

Construction notes / personal commentary:

This was an exercise in SNOT to the nth degree and it was really challenging to get all the geometries worked out and make the thing come part for interior access. But I think the end product really came out pretty slick. The sides are held together with 2 technic pins each which actually ended up better than trying an axle as the pressure required to pull it together or apart with the axle was usually too “catastrophic”. Somehow the pins work better. I don’t get it but I won’t complain if it works.

Comments and constructive criticism most appreciated!

Jeff Pelletier

Simply beautiful. Saw it on Brickshelf, and just had to comment. It's very understated; the simple gray belies all that snotwork. I only have a few nitpicks: that landing gear could stand to be a bit more refined, and you should get one of those (...) (20 years ago, 18-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) Jeff, This rocks, it somewhat reminds me of the liner next to the diner in the last Star Wars movie, shapewise at least. I don't know if I can give you any constructive criticism, as the whole thing looks great, nice and sleek from the (...) (20 years ago, 18-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) Very nice Jeff, very nice indeed. It has a nice design, with both a cool shape and plenty of functional elements. And I think that having lots of windows really helps to give it a civillian feel. The only criticism I can offer is that the (...) (20 years ago, 18-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) The hatches are great, and the overhead compartments rock! I don't recall seeing a larger ship that is this studless. And it is done well, as you didn't just resort to tiles. That's what the SNOT is all about. The folding mechanism for the (...) (20 years ago, 18-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Jeff, I find this moc satisfying in a way that only Charles Bronson films can. It seems more like a pleasure yacht than a space liner, but it is cool nonetheless. The placement of the windows, the stripped down greebles (damn I hate that word) and (...) (20 years ago, 19-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Overall I think it is a very nice MOC. I love the passenger windows and the overhead baggage compartments and all the other little details. After some thought though I do have some reservation with respect to the landing gear and the cockpit. The (...) (20 years ago, 19-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Overall very nice, but I think the engines need some work to live up to the rest of the ship. Other people mentioned the landing gear and I have to agree. It'd suck for that to fall over and break : ) -JSM (...) (20 years ago, 19-Apr-05, to lugnet.space)
